What is laboratory nutrition analysis?

WHAT IS NUTRITION ANALYSIS?

Nutrition Analysis is the process of evaluating the nutritional content of food to create an FDA-compliant Nutrition Facts Panel. This can be done through two approaches: lab-based nutrition analysis or the database method. While laboratory analysis is the most precise method, the best option is dependent on product composition and processing.

WHEN IS LAB-BASED NUTRITION ANALYSIS NEEDED VS THE DATABASE METHOD

Nutrition Analysis in the laboratory may be needed for products that have been processed in a specific way or include certain ingredients:

  • Dehydrated or dried
  • Fermented or pickled
  • Cold-pressed
  • Deep-fried
  • Alcohol-containing products (wine, beer, spirits, or recipes using alcohol)

ABOUT LABORATORY TESTING

All nutritional analyses at RL Labs are performed in ISO-certified laboratories to ensure the highest standards of accuracy and quality. A variety of methods are used to determine nutrient content including chemical, physical, and bioanalysis. The results from these tests provide the nutrient values that are used to create an FDA-complaint Nutrition Facts Panel for your product. Additionally, we will provide you with a report of the nutrient values present in 100 grams of the product which is used to formulate the nutrition fact panel.

REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS

While the FDA does not mandate laboratory nutrition analysis, FDA guidance recommends that the nutrient values on the Nutrition Facts Panel are based on product composition as determined by a laboratory analysis and holds the manufacturer responsible for the accuracy of the nutrition fact panel.

CONFIDENTIALITY AND PROPRIETARY RECIPES

Your proprietary recipe information is treated with the utmost confidentiality. All clients will receive a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) as well as a Statement of Work Accuracy to ensure the confidentiality of your valuable recipes.

SAMPLE SIZE, TURNAROUND TIMES and REQUIRED INFORMATION

For laboratory analysis, the turnaround time is 10-15 business days and we require 12 ounces/X Grams and your Nutritional Analysis Report will be delivered as a PDF. Once completed, we can use this data to produce your FDA Compliant Nutrition Fact Panel Labels. Using your nutrition analysis report is the best way to ensure accuracy in your label output. Labels take about 1-2 days to complete once we have the lab report and your serving size information.

To complete your Nutrition Fact Label, we need the following information. We will provide a template for you to complete before we get started:

  • Additional Processing Method: If you product use any of these methods please check the corresponding box.
  • For Baked Products: If you product is baked please provide the initial weight and the post weight.
  • If your product is packaged in a jar, please weigh your jar with the lid empty and then weigh it again with your product in it - subtract that weight and it will give you the net weight.
  • Serving Size: This is the amount you would customarily serve as a single serving and it MUST be reflected in grams or ounces based on the FDA serving size amounts.
  • Household Measurement Term you are using to weigh your ingredients (i.e 1/2 cup, 1 piece, 1/4 tsp)

RECIPE:

  • Please add your recipe including sub-ingredients. The FDA requires all sub ingredients to be listed.
  • Please make sure you add the weight of your ingredients (grams or oz). The FDA requires the ingredients to be listed in descending order. We ask for the weights to ensure we are compliant in listing the ingredients correctly.
