Supplement Testing

Amazon CofA, FDA 111 Compliance and Shelf Life Testing

100% Accurate Supplement Testing In an ISO Certified Lab

Turnaround Time varies based on the test type.

Dietary and health supplements come in many forms including tablets, capsules, soft gels, gel caps, powders, bars, gummies, and liquids. Supplement testing is more complex than regular food product or nutritional testing. There is a wider variety of things to test for and verify. Supplements often have stricter tolerances for meeting microbial loads and specifications.

The labeling and safety of dietary supplements is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) through the 1994 Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA). The FDA requires that all supplement manufacturers follow Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), regulations that apply not only to the finished brand supplement but also to raw materials and in-process materials. cGMP regulations require companies that manufacture, package, label or hold dietary supplements, assure the identity, purity, strength, and composition of all products.

Many retailers have released new and more strict requirements for supplement manufactures to show proof of cGMP compliance and independent ingredient testing before they will allow products to be sold.

Amazon Certificate of Analysis

In January 2022, Amazon announced new requirements for supplements. If you are planning to sell your product through Amazon, a special report is needed. Contact us today to talk about what is needed.

Label Verification Testing

To determine that the amounts of ingredients listed on the label are indeed present in the product. This test involves quantification, whether by testing or quantity by input calculation.

Identity Testing

Done to verify the ingredient/product is what it says it is. These results are most commonly shown as present or absent.

Shelf-life Testing

At each pull we test: Aerobic Plate Count (SPC/APC/TPC), Yeast/Mold, Peroxide Value or pH, Moisture content or Water activity, and Organoleptic or Sensory Analysis (color, odor, texture, overall visual).

Supplement Shelf-Life testing is performed using Active Ingredient Testing and must have 3 data points. All label claims must be met at the onset and end of testing. For comprehensive information related to shelf-life testing visit our shelf-life testing page.

Heavy Metals & Pesticide Residue

Heavy metals and pesticides are hard to avoid entirely as they are found in plants, water and minerals in our natural food chain. If present in the materials used to create supplements, laboratory testing can help verify the that the amount present is within a safe range

Microbiological analysis

cGMP require that “objectionable microorganisms” be absent from the products. Microbiological analysis is available to test for the most common microbial hazards to nutritional and dietary supplements including Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella, Escherichia coli, and Clostridium as well as others.

Preservative Challenge

Preservative Challenge, also known as antimicrobial effectiveness testing (AET) and preservative efficacy testing (PET) demonstrates the effectiveness of added antimicrobial preservatives that may be used to prevent the growth of microorganisms in multi-use containers.
