In her October 2009 statement, Margaret Hamburg, M.D, Commissioner of Food and Drugs states “FDA soon will propose guidance for the industry regarding nutrition labeling on the front of food packages, and plans to work collaboratively with the food industry to design and implement innovative approaches to front-of-package labeling that can help consumers choose healthy diets.”
According to Joseph J. Lewczak and Tiffany A. Towers, Davis & Gilbert LLP in an April 16, 2010 Washington Legal Foundation commentary “such a move would have a material detrimental impact upon food manufacturer’s and producer’s ability to communicate with and reach consumers over the cacophony of competing products on supermarket shelves.”
Still Dr. Hamburg urges “Today, ready access to reliable information about the calorie and nutrient content of food is even more important, given the prevalence of obesity and diet-related diseases in the United States.”
